Cask 385, a refill sherry cask, was put to sleep by Springbank in November 1998 and bottled by the Glengarry Cask Owners in April 2009. I am putting this head-to-head with sister cask 386, also refill sherry.
It smells of red fruit. Think berries. Cranberries, juniper berries, even some cherries. It also sports something very buttery and again that dirty edge that transports me to the attic. A little herbaceous too. Rather inactive cask, I feel. Some burnt butter, now. And a very soft hint of salt.
It is quite oily and soft on the spices. I get Werthers Original with a good helping of salt and some pepper. Slightly bitter as if from leather and oak. Perfectly drinkable without water. However. Anyway, I did not add any. Little influence from the cask, if you ask me. Nice and sweet.
The finish is pretty long and bittersweet. Becomes salty at the death.
This is nice. With a good balance.
