On 27 November 1998 Springbank filled this refill sherryvat 434 that was bottled at cask strength in April 2009 by the Glengarry Cask Owners. It is the only first fill sherry cask from the series.
Oh, my , this is a strong sherry nose. Baked pears, crème brûlée, dark chocolate, beeswax and candid sugar with a truckload of nuts, including walnuts that take care of a light bitter edge. Cloves. A nice hinit of peat and a pinch of salt. Some toasted oak as well. Espresso. This is very nice, round a creamy.
On the palate, it continues to be round and creamy, but also rather soft with some sweetness on a layer of salt and peat. That peat is a big fat layer, by the way. This might as well have been an Islay whisky on sherry. Caol Ila, even. Very nice balance between sweet, bitter and salt.
The finish is long, slightly bitter and drying. Very pleasant during winter time.
This is, for me, the best one from the series. Sturdy nose, complexe taste and wonderfully warming finish. Strong Springbank!
