My buddy Anthony brought back this gem from Springbank. A duty paid sample at 57.3% from a first fill sherry hogshead. I guess I’m in for a treat.

Some weird nose on baby sick, matchsticks, pickles (!) and dark fruit like figs. That is upholstered with some candied sugar, but also some varnish and cherry liqueur. Very amusing, but not very easy.

Nice body. Immediately very sweet, which comes a bit as a surprise after the rather sharp nose. Herbal too. And very smoky. The smoke becomes so big that I’m inclined to call the fire brigade. Once the malt has nestled itself the somewhat chalky, dirty character of Springbank shines through, wrapped in a jacket of Tunisian fig marmalade and raw ginger. Well, this is certainly something else. But it grows on you. From the second sip on I totally got it.

The finish is medium long, sweet with a sour touch as if from a grapefruit and a bitterness as if from the pith of said grapefruit. It remains smoky, spicy and warm until the death.

Well, that was certainly no easy Springbank. But very good once you get past the rather difficult nose.
