Springbank 12 CS Batches

So Springbank releases their 12 YO Cask Strength in distinct batches, but they're distinguished on the label only by their differing ABVs. I'd been harboring a geeky ambition to troll online reviews and the (thin, apparently) official info to compile a list of which ABV indicates which batch. But then, I just found this very welcome semi-official listing of just that: benswhisky.co.uk/2014/07/…

Awesome.

One thing to note from the blogger's comments below the table: Some sellers have gotten their batch IDs wrong.

Anyway, I see from that table that the bottle I had last year was batch 3 (ABV 55.3%). That's still the one on the shelves around me. (Quick dim-memory tasting note: Quite good, of course, but sweeter and more sherried than I would prefer.)

What got me thinking about these batches was Serge's recent review of batch 9, which he described in some very un-sherryish terms (soot, lemon, gravel, dirty concrete, old garage, ashes, and so on: whiskyfun.com/archivenovember14-1-Glengoyne…

That’s the batch that I’m now hunting for. If anyone knows where to find it, please share!

What has everyone else thought about the batches? Do you know which ones you’ve had? Where did they land on the sweet-to-salty spectrum?

I know some earlier ones must be saltier, which I love. I tried a mystery batch at a tasting a couple years ago that was absolutely awesome. I remember writing down "can unpeated whisky get any better??!!" (And yes, I know that Springbank is lightly peated.) I'd love to find that batch, but #9 from Serge's review sounds just as good.

Great post. I've been waiting for a promotion or bonus before purchasing Soringbank 12 CS. I found out today I'm being promoted. A store near me shows they gave it stock but I don't know the batch. Either batch I'm buying it. I'll post my review. Cheers!

@Malt-Nuisance, congrats on the promotion. I don't think you could pick a better way to celebrate.

My impression is that all the batches are good, so I wouldn't worry about which one you get if it's your first. Let us know which one you find and how you like it.

An additional "point of reference" (as Ralfy might say): My local specialist shop is on its last bottle of batch #3 (from September 2011) and the "new" ones behind it on the shelf are #6 (from January 2013).

So I guess these move pretty slowly through the system. Maybe today's hard-to-find batch will be tomorrow's shelf-filler.
