Springbank 14 Year Old 1998 Malts of Scotland

I have had the pleasure of tasting quite a few Springbank already, but as far as I know, this is the first single cask of this particular Campbeltowner that Malts of Scotland has bottled. It is a relatively young Springbank, from 1998.

The nose is somewhat weird. Neither fish nor flesh. It wants to be sweet, but the dried fruits like prunes and figs are clearly subdued by something that I can only describe as creamy cheese with olives. Some plums, raisins and gingerbread and jute. Butane gas? Like I said, a weird nose, not quite pleasant.

It is pretty oily on the palate (olive oil?) and feisty. Leading spices are ginger and white pepper. Wet carton and gyproc, not totally unexpected, but I cannot say I like this. Midpalate some fruitiness emerges, as you would expect from a sherry cask. Quite sharp.

The finish is fairly long, but the whole remains a bit dirty – for lack of a better word.

Seems like a strange cask selection to me. Chosen at the end of a tasting session, fellas? Anyway, not my cup of tea. Available for around 75 EUR.
