The Scottish Days (Schotse Dagen) in Belgium are a well-known event for Flemish lovers of the nectar. In 2003, this Springbank from 1975 was bottled for this festival, by Ian MacLeod, under their Chieftain’s banner. By the way: is is my oldest Springbank to date.

What a surprisingly sweet nose. Peelings from Granny Smith apples, oranges, mango and even passion fruit. Pineapple? A nice mineral side with a touch of smoke. Sugared lime, too. I love it.

It is a lot more Springbank on the palate than it was on the nose, if you know what I mean. Still a lot of fruit and a nice bitter edge as if from Seville oranges, but it also has a good helping of smoke and something that makes me think of fresh wood shavings. Midplate, a big hit of eucalyptus emerges.

The finish is good: waxy on all kinds of citrus with an extravagant dose of peat.

Pure indulgence whisky. I wish I had purchased it back in the day. Long gone, of course.

Mark, just the other day, I went back through your older reviews and browsed through some of them. You have developed into quite a Jedi knight of Scotch over the past few years. Well done. Keep up the great reviews here on Connosr, and I do like your website very much, as well. www.markdermul.be/toshanman/

This review intrigues me. Wish I'd seen it when the bottle was still available for purchase.

Are there any Toshans in this class available now for purchase?

@rigmarole thanks for the kind words, sir. I'm afraid it is quite impossible to compare Springbank & Auchentoshan, I'm afraid.

Actually, I wasn't asking about Springbank. I was asking another question, which I probably should have privately mailed to you. My question: do you know of any Toshans currently avail for purchase that resemble the 32YO 1979 Oloroso? I really liked your review of that one. Ruben Luyten also liked that one and I've found his reviews to be quite helpful. His tastebuds are similar to mine, for whatever reason. In many ways, his "straight shot" reviews are some of the most trustworthy. He isn't trying to brownnose distillers or to review whiskies with kid gloves, which is quite refreshing. I admire a reviewer who says it like it is (to him or to her).

I see. I guess you should try to get your hands on that Toshan then, eh? I do believe a few bottles are still around. Very expensive, though, but very, very good indeed. Feel free to PM me if you need further info.
