- Brand: Starward
- ABV: 50%
The Fortis expression is a young malt from Starward that matured in both American bourbon casks and red wine barrels. In this it differs greatly from both the Left-Field and the popular Nova. But I don't know if those red wine barrels come from France or from Australia. This core-range expression is bottled at a slightly higher alcohol percentage, i.e. 50%. It can be found at about 70 EUR in Belgium. Sweet and sour nose with clear wine influences which translates to cherries, dry wood and sourdough bread. Feisty on paprika powder and oregano with something fresh like eucalyptus. After a few minutes of breathing, it becomes slightly sweeter and some more red fruit appears, while the herbs retreat a bit. It has a great body. High viscosity. Thick fluidity, as we call it. Immediately sweet, even some Jelly Beans, before the herbs make themselves heard. Something earthy like autumn leaves and mushrooms, supported by dark bread and cloves. Cinnamon on the deathbed. The finish is quite long, thanks (or is that 'due') to the combination of young age and higher alcohol percentage. This is a strong release from Down Under. Reminds me of those first bottles I brought over at the time, but with a firmer spiciness. Good stuff!
