Suntory Old is a popular whisky from Japan, which first appeared in the 1940s. It continued to lead the way until the 1980s when single malts began to grow in popularity and this fun blend lost its prestige somewhat. I was able to pick up a bottle from the 1990s with the strange contents of 760ml. It is more than plausible to suspect that this contains quite a lot of Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita, right? Well, that's a surprisingly nice nose, actually. Dark berries, plums, dates and a hint of peat! Yes, this is of a completely different caliber than what often appears today in (whether or not) Japanese blends. It's beautiful! The body is good, the whisky on the palate nicely peppered. And a great continuation of the nose with dark fruit and herbs and especially again that delicious trace of smoke that reminds me of Hakushu. There is undoubtedly a lot of that in it. The finish is medium-length, sweet and satisfying. I really like this bottle! Special Quality? Indeed.
