Founded in 2015, the Teeling distillery in Dublin celebrated its7th anniversary in 2022. For this occasion, 900 bottles of this 7th Birthday Batch were launched. It has become a mix of single malt, peated single malt and Pot Still.
The nose is a nice mix of fruit (apricots and mandarins in the lead, followed by kiwi and a hint of green banana), millefeuille pastries and soft herbs. The whole is wrapped in a subtle smokiness and even gets a maritime touch through some sea air, chervil and wet rocks. Very pleasant.
The start is firm enough and immediately very fruity. Bright fruit, especially. Stone fruit. Pineapple. But immediately the smoke attracts attention and makes the whole thing pleasantly warm, while the herbs of the wood slowly but surely take the reins. Chervil, marjoram and even a pinch of pepper. A nice balance, too, which in this case can be called quite a bit of craftmanship, knowing that it is a mix of three whiskey styles. Kudos!
The finish is medium-length, sweet and smoky, but the fruit leaves with a silent drum through the back door, while the spices and something of candied orange peels come back for an encore.
HBD, or Happy Birthday, Teeling. This is a very successful release. Thank you for the sample, Benny.
