The first Brabazon, which appeared in March 2017, what a bit of a strange whiskey, because it had matured on all kinds of sherry casks that combined sweetness with burnt rubber. But however atypical, I soon found it to my liking. This second batch, which saw the light of day in August 2017, matured on port casks. It slepts on a combination of Tawny Port, Ruby Port and White Port for between 8 and 16 years. If memory serves, it is named after Chambré Brabazon, a 17th Century politician (but don’t quote me on that).

Oh, yes, this nose is something else. Dark and sweet on plums, raisins and a marmalade of figs, loads of dried pineapple and strawberry, but also wonderful citrusy notes (think grapefruit and mandarin). It smells syrupy sweet. Chocolate cookies. Wonderful.

It in indeed quite syrupy on the palate, but also very spicy. Next to maple syrup, candied sugar and nutmeg, I get plums, blueberries, figs and strawberries in a stew. Loads of toffee. A mild salty edge kicks in with a vengeance, but it works just fine! The oak gives it a drying element. Again wonderful.

The finish is simply marvelous. Sweet verses salt, drying, spicy and very long.

The port casks have not overpowered the malt at all, but do play a significant role, making this whiskey a veritable gem. Around 70 EUR and worth every cent.
