A few months ago I tried the Batch 2, Batch 3 and new ‘Unbatched’ Teeling Pot Still at a tasting with the Master Distiller Alex Chasko near Brussels. I found them to be interesting, but not particularly good. Well, it is very young whiskey, what did you expect. It has a long way to go still. Only the Unbatched has matured for 7 years and there is some sherry matured pot still in the mix, making it quite interesting. But a friend at the tasting implored that Batch 1 as outstanding and sent me a sample a few weeks later. Well, then, if I must…

The nose is very young on grass, green twigs, hay and flowers. Lots of grain and tannins, some green garden herbs. Parsley, I’d say. Fruit wise it’s young apples and quince. A fresh note of mint, but also some cognac. Not bad, but I’m not flabbergasted either, not by a long shot.

The body is light, but not watery. It tastes very fresh, a bit candy-like on apples, pears and some lavender. Nice note of caramel and honey and again that fresh mint. Perfect continuation of the nose. A bit spicy on white pepper and ginger. Midpalate I get some nougat and white chocolate. Young, fresh and dapper.

The finish – on apples and pears – is gone in the blink of an eye.

This may sound strange, but of the first three batches, this is indeed the best. Thanks, Gunter!
