A new film called "The Angel's Share" is to be released by British director Ken Loach "Set in Glasgow, it stars newcomer Paul Brannigan as Robbie, an ex-offender and new father for whom a trip to a whisky distillery may point the way to a new career and, possibly, a rather less orthodox way out of poverty."

Nice to Charlie Maclean get some airtime on the big screen :)

Looks nice. I saw a few familiar things like Springbank, Glengoyne, Charles MacLean. Would love to see it.

My sister just mailed me the info. Today this movie is releasing in Germany. Was going to open a thread, but hey we already have one. Heard a criticism in the radio and this seems to be a very nice movie: Dramatic, pure, emotional and exciting.

Anybody already watched it? I am going to see this for sure.

It hasn't been, nor (according to imdb.com) is it scheduled to be, released here in the States. Hope it at least gets a DVD or downloadable release here eventually.

The movie just premiered at Canines this year, so it's still relatively new. I heard there was a bit of a bidding war over distribution rights, and it was reported that it did get picked up by a US distributor for North American release. I'm pretty sure it will at least get limited release to the art house theaters in the bigger metropolitan areas, and eventually will be available on Blueray and DVD.

I was a film producer in my last life, and I know a little about the hoops you have to jump through to get a film ready for distribution, and the lead time to get a place in the release schedule. It could take a year before this film is shown in North America. When it does, I plan to see it opening night. This movie is for us, what "Sideways" and "Bottle Shock" was for wine lovers. I'm looking forward to seeing it!

Thanks, @MacBaker62. I will watch closely for if and when the film opens in Chicago. If not, I hope it's the sort of film that Criterion picks up for a DVD release.

You can download it free from isoHunt in avi format if you install uTorrent which is also free. I just got it and it looks great. Could use subtitles for the thick Glaswegian dialogue though.

Wow, talk about 'ask and ye shall receive.' Many thanks to @MacBaker62 and @BlueNote. Just watched it last night, and it was time well-spent. Tough, earthy, thought-provoking -- and a real "feelgood" entertainer at the same time. Very much a must-see for whisky lovers. (You're right about the dialect, however, @BlueNote!)

I'm looking forward to watching this! Sounds like a great film.

Just a side note, if people here are not familiar with torrents and don't want to get into any potential problems with groups like the record and movie industries (whilst not doing anything "illegal", mind you - this applies when you are downloading legitimate, copyright-free material using bittorrent where just connecting to these networks can get them logging your IP address), ensure your torrent downloader incorporates block lists and encryption, and wherever possible, use a web proxy or "tor" plugin with your web browser when browsing torrent sites.

Good point @systemdown. I have been doing this for a couple of years now for music, movies and mainly Brit TV programs and documentaries that are not available here. I have not had any problems, but I am not downloading and uploading huge amounts of stuff. But I agree, the world wide web is a minefield and it pays to tread carefully.

I was watching this movie this week too. I enjoyed it. Ofc it is not very realistic and for a Whiskyhead there were some weird points. But it was just a neat story, something to have a laugh and a good evening with friends. Unfortunately we just had a single dram taken with us, you get thirsty while watching this one ;)

If you're not into whisky this movie hasn't got much, if you are it has got a little. You can fast forward past the wanker with small-man-complex syndrome and just enjoy the parts with Charlie MacLean and it's not too bad. I enjoyed watching it, but wouldn't call it a good movie.

Are there any other recommendations for whisky related movies, anyone?

@NilsG, it is not specifically whisky-related, but Ken Burns three part documentary on the American Probition is very educational and fantastically entertaining. A cautionary tale on how trying to restrain normal human wants leads to the most extreme bad consequences in society.

@Sroberts86 oh the Whisky Galore movie was fantastic! Whisky solves anything; illness, engagement problems and mother complex. The antagonist of course had to be an Englishman. Rather a story about the love (read "addiction") for whisky than whisky itself. Just great!

Seen the movie yesterday, what can I say apart from brilliant, d(r)am good movie. Good story and a true reflection and a small snippet of life in my home city, once they go to the distilleries they feature one of my favourites Balblair, I should also mention the other liquid of life IRN BRU. This movie is not to be missed.
