As I have tasted many malts and grains from my home country Germany, I never thought that I would find a drinkable, or even a good one. But surprise: Nearby my hometown Braunschweig in the Harz Mountains I have found a very small distillery. I read a review in Murray's Bible and have visited the two distillers.
The tasting in the distillery was an unexpected joy, I tasted a "The Glen Els - Single Tawny Port Cask", which was a little bit like an old Glenglassaugh I have tasted in Scotland some years ago.
Nose: Started with rich Oak and loads of raisins. After the first aroma-flush, there was an intense toffee flavour with a spicy note of cinnamon and dark chocolate.
Taste: Like in the nose this Whisky started quite sweet and very smooth with raisins and some kind of apple or pear. While the first flavour passed by, another well-balanced vanilla, oak, toffee flavour came up to the big finish of tangerines.
After I have tasted it, I have bought 5 bottles because it is limited to 406 bottles. After talking to the master distiller, he said that in late spring 2012 another Port edition will be available.
Definitely worth buying - even though not available outside of Germany yet.
Good review. We need more like this for German quality drams. Go for it @Schnapsfritze :)
