The Hyde... I had not yet heard of it until I saw the bottle at a whisky festival in Ghent. It came highly recommended by the people around the booth, so I took home a sample. It is an Irish single malt that currently has been released in three versions. I try the first one, 10 years old and matured on bourbon casks. It is not clear if the malt comes from Bushmills, Cooley or Midleton, but Hyde does not (yet) have an active distillery at this point.
The nose starts honeysweet on apple cake and vanilla pudding, followed by some orange and lemon juice. A bit of fresh menthol and a hint of buttermilk, but also a touch of wood glue. Something that reminds me of passion fruit, but not quite. It is fairly creamy, which I like.
The light body is made up for with honey and sweet fruit, again mostly citrus. A touch piquant on bakers spices. Hint of white chocolate with hazelnuts. Again loads of vanilla. Becomes creamier with the second sip.
The finish remains spicy, but is fairly short.
This is a playful whiskey. Nothing wrong with it. Except maybe the price. 55 to 65 EUR for a bottle is a bit steep in my book.
Good review. This 10 year old was served blind at our recent dinner, and impressed. Many said it quickly became their preferred irish whiskey, and I agree. Your comments on price are valid, as it fights in the Lagavulin Limited release bracket - which I prefer over this.
