The Founder’s Reserve from The Irishman is a single cask, albeit cut to 46%. The whiskey, a blend by the way, was finished on a Caribbean cask. That means rum of course. From Santa Lucia if you really want to know. Let's get to it.
Honeysweet, but wonderfully tropical fruity nose. Banana, pineapple, mint and a touch of spices from the wood. All the way in the back some pencil shavings that reveal the grain, but all in all a beautiful nose that makes my mouth water.
It's quite fruity on the palate, albeit a bit less tropical. Somewhat piquant. White pepper, bakery spices, mint and mental – indeed, they are not the same. Good body. It is surprisingly creamy and round and very tasty indeed.
The finish is long, warm and softly seasoned.
What a lovely whiskey. The influence of the rum cask is big, true, but in this case it works. I am quite fond of this.
