Putting my money where my mouth is, I immediately got two more Tomintoul samples. I will taste them head to head. Let us start off with this 43 Year Old from A.D. Rattray, from a bourbon cask, bottled in 2010.

Hmm, yes, again very tropical on mirabel, apricot, peach, mandarin, grapefruit. You name it, this Tomintoul has got it. And so soft, too. Almost too soft. Honey, vanilla, almond paste. Very sweet. Some eucalyptus and melon make for a dash of freshness. And a tiny bit of woodsmoke and roasted nuts. But so delicate, the dram seems almost breakable.

I get some more spices on the palate, as well as some more bitterness from the wood. It does not show a lot of punch, though. Well, I do not mind, for this is very good stuff. Oily on white fruit and a dustiness that honors the age. A little like eau-de-vie, tough. Lemon geneva. Grainy, too. I fear my trip to the topics has come to an end. But still. Very nice.

The finish is rather short, on citrus and oak with a hint of nutmeg.

This is a very good Tomintoul. Apparently 1967 was a good year (there are more Indie bottling to be found of this vintage).
