Caol Ila Distillers Edition 70cl is a good starting point @polmental

1) Caol Ila DE Because Caol Ila provides a different peat that needs to be tasted !
2) Kilchoman (any release) Because it is the birth of a great whisky and you want to be able to say to you grand child that you tasted on the first releases
3) Lagavulin 16yo Because it is a classic !
4) Ardberg 10yo or Uigeidail if it is under your mark where you lived. Here in Montreal it is 145$ CAD, but it is almost a fraud ! Ardberg 10 yo defines what peated should be. Uigeidail because it shows what the wedding between peat and Sherry can create.... Lagavulin DE does the same thing !
5) Laphroaig 10yo or 10 yo CS or Quarter Cask Laphroaig must be in any Islay tour ! Quarter Cask is less medicinal, which is the best characteristic of Laphroaig...

You can purchase a set of islay whiskies on The Whisky Exchange, for £85 you get quarter bottles of caol ila 12 and 18, lagavulin 16 and 12 cask strength and a port ellen 7th release.Theres also a set of 3 laphroiags the 10 the quarter cask and the cask strength , they are 33cl bottles and costs £60 for the set, saves you spending a big chunk of cash on 70cl bottles and leaves you some cash to try other islays too. A bunnahabhain 12 yo is worth a punt for £30 probably the lightest peated islay but very good value , Ardbeg 10 yo costs £30 and is a real winner of an islay and a must have.Should keep you busy for a while mate, happy shopping.Oh and i nearly forgot kilchoman, i think the summer release is out soon and will probably be around £50 and if its anything like the spring release we are in for another treat.

@Kutter A good list, but I think missing out Bruichladdich would be a mistake; I'd be inclined to swap out one of the last two for a Bruichladdich Waves - it's below budget but worthwhile!
However, have to agree that Kilchoman is an absolute must. Now the Summer 2010 release is out I might allow myself to crack open the Spring 2010 I have waiting for me in the cupboard...

Could you please send me you suggestions for a round-Islay tasting of about 5 malts? I'd like the £50 per bottle mark roughly, and want to get a good indication of the variety on Islay, e.g. starting with the lighter ones before heading to the south for the 'big smoke'. Thanks!
