@markjedi1 When are you there? What days in Glasgow?
I am on Islay for the last week of September, but am in Glasgow in the 28th. WIll hopefully be meeting up with Mark Connelly at the Bon Accord for a dram. You around then?

@antihero, 28th September is the day I return to Belgium, I'm afraid. I'll be there from Friday until Monday morning, driving all the way up to Elgin and back. @LeFrog, thanks. It will be a beginner's guide - in Flemish, though.

By far the best plase to visit is The Highlander Inn at centre of the village called Craigellachie. They have over 700 Whiskies and are happy to help. I stayed two nights at their bar:)
Read more about it from my blog. khvonloman.blogspot.com.

@KHvonLoman Thanks for that tip. It's on our route, so I'll be sure to make a stop!

Alright, folks, I'm off to Glasgow. See you all in a week. Newsflash: just got word that Auchentoshan is currently battling last night's flash flooding. Better pack my wellington boots, I guess.

@markjedi1 Benromach Distillery is in Forres. Dalwhinnie isoff the beating track in Invernesshire. Edradour is in the wilderness of Perthshire. As for Glenlivet? you are better off visiting Glenkinchie, Auchentoshan, Glengoyne and Tullibardine.

Ah, you see it pays to read before you write. I have just noticed you are going to Elgin. I thought it said Edin'. Tips??....
Observe the speed limit, the police like to catch people speeding. I think they get a bunus or something.
The road between Inverness and Elgin can get real busy, be patient, it's a dangerous road. You need to cross a railroad to get to Benromach in Forres. Dalwhinnie and Edradour are not that easy to find, keep your wits about you. They are signposted but drive slow so as to avoid missing junctions. The roads to those 2 distilleries will not be busy so enjoy the drive, but watch out for deer. I hope you have a pleasant stay in Scotland. Slainte

Just got back from my little trip to Scotland. It was a marvellous! We got more than we bargained for, that's for sure. The reception at Auchentoshan was unbelievable. We got the behind-the-scenes-tour with the head distiller, bottled our own from a 13 year old cask and even got a little bit of new make. I should have a full report up on my blog soon (in Flemish though, but the photos speak volumes in themselves). We visited more distilleries than we originally planned (some only from the outside though). The landscape was beyond belief, especially when the sun just got up or went down. The golden sheen on the hills was breathtaking. I love Scotland and hope to return soon!

@markjedi1 The pictures certainly speak volumes and it looked like you had an awesome time. Living in Vancouver its going to be a fair trip but it is certainly on my and my wife's bucket list to do a trip like this. Thanks for sharing.

I'm planning a first trip to Scotland between July and October of this year. I namely want to visit Islay and the far North town of Wick. Any route in between that includes Aberfeldy. Suggestions as to best time and route welcome.

Not sure if there's a better example of this out there, but a while back I stumbled on a handy Google Map of Scottish distilleries, which has already proven invaluable to me in planning trips - enjoy:

Hi @Wodha I've just got back from a trip to Scotland and whilst it was very cold, it was much quieter than in the summer, so I would definitely suggest going around October and visiting Dufftown as there are a number of great distilleries worth visiting dufftown.co.uk/whisky_distilleries.php/ pack a scarf!

Two tips, both having to do with driving:
1) Do not understimate driving times; Scotland is a big place. 2) Try to avoid roads with 3-digit (or 4-digit) road numbers as these are typically wide enough for only 1 car with a passing lane every half mile and locals who drive as if on a German Autobahn.

I'll be heading back over to Bonnie Scotland next weekend, visiting Glengoyne distillery and - of course - returning to my beloved Auchentoshan to pick up several bottles and record some interviews for my book.

In preparation of a whisky book I'm writing, I'll be visiting Scotland end of this month for (only) 4 days. Unfortunately I'm limited to Glasgow and Elgin (and surroundings). I will be visiting Auchentoshan (obviously), Edradour, Dalwhinnie, Benromach en Glenlivet. Any tips you can give me?
