You know I have a weak spot for new make, I’m sure. I have been able to try quite a few. Erik Molenaar of the Dutch Wagging Finger Distillery has started producing whisky as well. The spirit in front of me now was distilled on 6th February of this year and cut to 50%. It is lightly peated (20 to 25 ppm). It’s the Patron’s (cask owners) distillate that currently matures on a former Fino sherry cask. I will try it neat.
The typical notes of grain and overcooked vegetables is less present than expected. This is a very clean new make that already shows a bit of a sweet side and even a freshness of mint. Quite surprising and very pleasant. The peat translates into a very soft smokiness. A touch sweet & sour, but creamy. I am a fan.
On the palate as well, it is all very clean. Nicely malty, now. And the smokiness becomes grand and sets your mouth aflame. Very full flavored. Reminds me a bit of currants and earth. Not a single off note. Very good.
The finish is very long, smoky sweet and simply delicious.
This is a great new make. And we know from Erik’s gin and Geneva that he has some good casks at his disposal, so I predict that this is going to be a very good whisky. That’s craftsmanship!
