When The Nectar, a famous Belgian importer, selects a single cask to have bottled in their name, we expect it to be good. The fact that it was bottled at cask strength already makes my heart leap. This West Cork is indeed a single malt. Ask for the cask the label states ‘Heavy char bourbon barrel & toasted oak’. That sounds a bit weird considering the fact that it is a single cask.

Dark and sweet nose on acacia honey, baked apples, wood shavings and caramel. Mandarin from a can and a pleasant floral note. Chocolate? Plums? Christmas cake. Very pleasant indeed.

Pretty creamy on the palate. Lots of fruit, both candied and dried, with a lovely spiciness from the wood. Think cinnamon and nutmeg, but also a touch of cloves. Marzipan and woodsmoke. Becomes quite piquant, to be honest. I like this.

A very long and warm finish to round things off.

By far the best I have tried so far from West Cork. Admittedly this is only my fifth. Thank you, Benny.
