At Westland, in the American state of Washington, they also make peated malt whiskey.

The nose starts rather closed, to be honest. Not a lot of peat, as far as I am concerned. Not that I was expecting it, but still. It is very close to the American Oak, but with a trace of smoke. And somewhat more herbal. Forrest scents. And still loads of vanilla and coffee.

On the palate, the peat is a lot more present and offers up loads of earthy notes. Yes, this is very good indeed! Very sweet, almost liquid candy, but wrapped in a grand blanket of smoke and peat. Nothing complex about it, but what a beautiful simplicity!

The finish is medium long, mildly drying, honeysweet and smoky. Only at the death does the wood offer up some spices.

The nose was not very promising, but on the palate it immediately became my favorite of the three. Unfortunately, like its twins, it is rather expensive for what you get.

I tasted this at a Chicago-area Binny's last week and—even cutting it some slack for being served in a chintzy little plastic shot cup thing—found it pretty unimpressive. It was fine and it was tasty enough, but it was also thin and... uninteresting.

They had them marked down to $50/bottle (or was it $40?) and I still passed. For that money, you can get Ardbeg 10, which beats the pants off this all day. Granted, Ardbeg 10 presents a pretty high bar to pass, but we're fortunate to have that high bar and I will use it.
