It is a little known fact that Westland, a craft distillery in Washington state, uses a Belgian yeast for its single malt whiskey. This specific expression matured partly on sherry casks – both oloroso and PX – and partly on bourbon casks.
The nose is very spicy, but less sherried than anticipated. The leading aromas are butterscotch, vanilla and – errr… - curry ketchup. How weird. But not unpleasant. Underneath some dark fruits are hiding, but they have all the trouble in the world to reveal themselves.
It is rather herbal than sweet on the palate. I am thinking sage and raisins. Something mildly smoky, probably from the charring of the casks. Some chocolate. All in all a pleasant palate, but less entertaining than I had hoped.
The finish is rather short on grain and chocolate with a touch of rubber at the death.
Certainly worth seeking out, but I think Sherry Wood is a bit unlucky. It does not fulfill that promise. This one is 85 EUR, which is quite expensive. Let’s not forget that this is only 2 years old!
