At the same time as the Belgian Trappist Ale edition, a veritable Belgium Edition was also released, so I most certainly could not allow this to pass me by. It is a single barrel that was cut to 50%. I've been really looking forward to this. The barrel – barrel #780 – was specially selected by Stephan De Bolle and his Cinoco team. And as they know what they're doing, I'm bracing myself for a great taste experience.

Firm and aromatic nose on coffee, licorice wood, young branches, chocolate with caramel filling, crème au beurre, vanilla and candied raspberries. Wow! Fascinating nose that really kept me busy for fifteen minutes.

Nicely mouth filling and spicy. Less sweet – a lot less sweet – than the Belgian Trappist Ale release, where the emphasis here is more on earthy notes and spices. It also shows a bit more wood. This one has more weight. More depth. The licorice wood returns midpalate.

In the finish I get Café Noir cookies, dried apricots and cloves.

Excellent barrel selection. I'm going to order myself another bottle of this.
