Lucky for me Vancouver has very good tap water, so that's what I use. I always assumed the flavour of the water itself wasn't really the point anyway -- surely it'd be overpowered by the whisky you're adding it to? For me this is a little moot, anyway. I seldom add water, even if I'm drinking cask strength. I guess I'm a purist of sorts, because I almost always prefer the whisky as it is.

@WhiskyBee Pure Rain does it for me - I especially like that it changes nothing of the essence of the Whisky, simply opens up those that are a bit 'shy'. I don't use much, drops mostly: a'bunadh gets a couple of teaspoons to a large measure, 2 1/2 fl oz. (more or less).

Hi WhiskyBee,
We are very lucky to have our own well. I don't add it to my whisky though. I've ruined more whiskies than I've saved with water!
When we're away from home and want to offer water with whisky we buy the 2.5 gallon containers of spring water. They are far less expensive than the liter-or-so bottles, the water's wonderful, and it doesn't spoil.

As we have excellent tap water I use it - I also filtered it with a Britta System and I tried Speyside Glenlivet but besides the hassle and the cost there was no difference in taste to me, Vittel spring water works pretty well too.

I generally use Fiji water with my whiskey. I like the taste of the water, and in particular, I like how it feels a bit oily and silky when I'm drinking just the water. Compliments the whisky quite well. I used to use a Scottish spring water called Highland Springs, but the store I used to buy no longer carries it. It was also an excellent water. From time to time I will use Evian. I am envious of Heartless Ninny and Maltster who have excellent tap water. Where I live , there are days when the water smells like chlorine or sulphur so bad, it makes your stomach turn. I hardly ever drink it.

@StevieC I didn't realize that the water back east was no good. That's a real shame.

@WhiskyBee Great discussion point. Here were I'm at the tap from our well has a lot of limestone and iron in it. So for the few drops my admiral (wife) and I use we use store bought distilled water. The water from the black or green garden hose just wasn't giving me good results. :)

Although I'm using less water in my whisky these days, there are still many expressions that I find benefit from a bit of aqua pura. Unfortunately, we have horrible-tasting hard tap water in my area, so I rely on the bottled stuff for my booze. I usually use either Dasani or Aquafina, whichever is on sale at the supermarket. I find these two are relatively free of the salt or plastic taste found in some bottled waters. I don't choose to buy distillery-source water, although I suppose I'm open to it if they greatly improve the experience. But frankly, I'd rather spend the money on another bottle of whisky.
Do you have personal water preferences? Could I be using something better?
