Another few you could consider would be (to replace lagavulin or oban) Laphroaig or Ardbeg 10. And instead of the Glenlivet, a Glenfiddich or Glenfarclas 12/15.
For a little less, I've found that Singleton and Auchentoshan aren't bad alternatives.

Here is my suggestion: Glenfiddich 12yo (Glenfarclas 10yo), Old Pulteney 12yo (Glenmorangie 10yo Original), Highland Park 12yo (Oban 14yo), Talisker 10yo (Springbank 10yo), Laphroaig 10yo (Lagavulin 16yo) and Auchentoshan 12yo (Glengoyne 10yo).

I was wondering what were 5 or 6 whiskeys that would start a good foundation for a collection. I would like to have a wide variety of taste from all over. And please don't break the bank, i would like to not take out a second mortgage. Thanks guys and gals.
