Whisky Bar in New York

I am from Montreal and I will go in New York for a Whisky Cruise on the Hudson end of August with some friends. I would like to go in a great whisky bar while I am in Mannathan.

Is any of you have a good recommendation ?

BTW: In Montreal, there is a bar named "Ile Noire" (it means black Island named after a comic from Tintin) on St-Denis street, which is very good.

@Kutter I live in NYC. Brandylibrary.com Its a bit pricey BUT they do have a crazy selection of top top stuff. The problem is NYC is $$$$$ and good Scotch goes right up there with it. Have a blast on the cruise!!!

I would suggest: Brandy Library (best selection, fancy and pricey as Carter said) DBA (good selection, also great beer selection) Whiskey Ward (good selection, good prices) Char No. 4 (great selection, especially American whiskey; good food; in Brooklyn) Fette Sau (American whiskey only - great selection; good BBQ food; in Brooklyn)

You should be able to find menus and directions for these places online.

@Kutter. First of all, I love and miss Montreal and next time I'm there I'll hit up Ile Noire.

Some suggestions: I second the recommendations for Brandy Library, DBA, and Whiskey Ward. All great places. The bartenders at Whiskey Ward are great, but the selection at Brandy Library cannot be beat. DBA has an outdoor space which is nice.

If you are in Midtown, St. Andrews is a Scottish pub/restaurant and has a phenomenal selection of as well. What I like is that they offer half pours which gives you the opportunity to sample a few good whiskies. Char #4 in Brooklyn also does this and if you go there, while their specialty is American whiskey, they have some rare Scotches that are not on the menu nor are available to purchase in the US (Ask for the Karuizawa 1985 - phenomenal). There is also a place called Bar & Books that has 3 different locations. The one on Hudson is also a cigar bar and I like the atmosphere. All have a very good whiskey selection.

Basically if I had to choose one place to go to it would probably be Brandy Library for Scotch and Char #4 for American Whiskey. And since I gravitate to American whiskey, I would choose Char #4. Plus, their food is amazing. Some of the best ribs in the city.

@cartermclean I live outside of the city right now. I guess I'm one of those rare people who actually like going to Brooklyn without living there... But actually I will be moving to BK in 6 months or so. Not sure where.

My favorite place is Vintry, a small fancy bar in Midtown in a beautiful short street reminiscent of Ireland. They offer a great vast selection of whiskies and wines and half price for half drams. Unbeatable.

I reiterate Brandy Library (if you can afford it), Hudson Bar & Books (& cigars), DBA, and St. Andrews. Of course none of these are right near Pier 61 on 23rd St. were the cruise docks but in NYC nothing is really that far.

I know this original post is ancient, but it's interesting and a lot of people are trying to find a decent glass of whisky in NYC. They also have iphones like I do, but this frickin place looks awesome:

The Flat Iron Room has over 500 Whiskies. It's in one of the coolest and most historic buildings in Manhattos. 37 West 26th Street, 212-725-3860. www.theflatironroom.com

I lived in NYC from 1991-1998 but I didn't drink much scotch at the time. Wish I had been into scotch. If I could go back in time, I'd get a few bottles of Port Ellen and Brora in 1994, have a drink with EL Doctorow, Denis Donahue, and Alan Ginsberg, with whom I studied as a student, and stay in the Ph.D program at Columbia U. instead of dropping out with a mere MA from NYU and becoming a community college teacher instead of a big shot professor.

@goldfilm sorry, Vintry is not in Midtown, it's actually in 57 Stone St, Financial District.

And all because you DIDN'T drink scotch. I would suggest more lives have been ruined by whisky than improved...
