I have a special bond with Whiskyblender for three reasons. Foremost, I was one of the First to create a blend when they launched their website. Second I am now good friends with the driving forces behind the concept (Andrew Nicolson and John Lamond). Third, the creation of my first bottle was the reason I started my series of video notes Whisky Ramblings. When they announced their first birthday end of November 2012, I happily went online to create yet another blend, aptly named Birthday Blend. I opened it today, January 7th, to celebrate my own birthday.
De nose is young and fresh with loads of vanilla and caramel, upholstered with nice hints of sea spray and oranges. Somewhat zesty. Some nuts and coconut give it a slightly tropical edge.
On the palate it is spicy (ginger, white pepper) and sweet. Somewhat creamy, as well. Very fruity now, with oranges and tangerines in the lead. You can taste this is a young whisky, but it does not bother me in the least.
The finish is warming and spicy, but not overly long. I get some allspice at the death.
A fun blend for a fun day. I will happily put this on the table tonight, when my friends arrive for a cozy chat and a bite to eat.
Happy birthday, 'markjedi1'. I shall raise an Auchentoshan Valinch in your honour. Another well written review! This one-of-a-kind bottle sounds like a great whisky experience.
