I just tried a 1970s bottling from this legendary blend, which was very old school and lovely. Luckily, I have another bottle, albeit from a later decade. Let’s find out if this White Horse from the 1980s is equally pleasant. It is bottled at a lower strength and much brighter in color though.

Well, I have to admit that this nose if even better than that of the 1970s White Horse. Brighter, if you know what I mean. Still very old school, mind you. More oranges, honey and vanilla and a little less smoke (less Lagavulin?), but also white fruit and peach. A bit like an orange liqueur, but ballsy. The second whiff adds Italian coffee with chocolate shavings. While the heart, the essence of this White Horse is very similar to the older release, the experience is quite different. This one has more a character of its own that is softer and sweeter. And absolutely delicious.

Good body, almost creamy and very sweet from the start. Orange juice, peach and toffee. The second sip adds spices. Ah, and there is the peat! Lovely. In fact, the Lagavulin is almost recognizable. What a great development!

The finish is long. The finish is sweet and smoky. The finish is an absolute pleasure.

What a feast! White Horse… if you see an older release (and they are often quite affordable), pick on up!
