There are already quite a few expressions from WillowBurn, including – in the so-called Batch No 1 – no less than 6 finishes: Marsala (which I just tried), Moscatel, Grand Cru Claret, Ruby & Tawny Port, Amarone and Malaga. Let’s give the one on port casks a go.

Soft, sweet and fruity nose with a lot of wood smoke. Red fruit draws your attention. Think strawberries and raspberries, but also some cranberries and a single pear. Very accessible. Soft on the spices. A truckload of dark honey makes the whole sweeter still.

It is pretty oily and honeysweet on the palate. Next to the red fruit and typical wood smoke I now detect clear notes of port. Dark fruit in a walnut liqueur, some nutmeg and cinnamon, black pepper and again some honey. This is Christmas in your glass.

In the medium long finish I get something that reminds me of tobacco, while the walnut liqueur never really goes away.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, then this is for you. Reminds me more of a liqueur than a whisky, but hey, it’s a lovely little dram nonetheless.

Sounds right up my alley for this time of year! I tend to prefer certain profiles depending on the seasons. And this is just the kind of whisky I tend to look for in winter.
