Sample number 2 from @Nelom, who surprised me today with four of my sample bottles refilled with some stuff I don't have.
I've never had Woodford Reserve before, and this one is the Distiller's Select batch 20, bottle 2931 opened August 2016 and poured (sample) Aug 28.
As per my usual, I do not add water to my bourbons.
Nose - Wow! Bright fruits, apple, pineapple, sweet thick syrup (can something smell thick? this does). It's like Hyacinths (not the actual smell, but the heaviness of the aroma). But I do get sweet flowers. Later, after tasting, I smell some brown sugar or caramel. 23/25
Taste - thin to medium mouthfeel. effervescent almost. I get a hint of menthol, brown sugar. it's quite a sweet bourbon. maybe vanilla in the background. I get some spiciness. 21/25
Finish. medium. Starts spicy then my mouth starts to feel dry. not bad. 21/25
Balance - I expected more on the palate after what I smelled. So the balance is a little off, but it is a pleasant dram. 20/25
Total Score - 85/100
I like this, but even for me it's a bit sweet and unidimentional. This is not one I will buy but if offered I might accept a dram.
