Happy 4th of July! That calls for an American drink, right? Let’s have a Woodford Reserve. The actual name of the distillery is Labrot & Graham, which can still be found on the label. This bourbon sets itself apart because it is triple distilled! The mash bill consists of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley. The Distiller’s Select has matured for a minimum of 6 years. The brand was only launched in 1996 – as a premium bourbon – and is doing very well. It is even the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby. Previous releases have been bottled at 42.2% and 43.2%, but this one sits at a comfortable 45.2% aka 90.4 Proof.

Lovely and layered nose with lots of fruit like peach, plum, cherry, pear and baked apples. Some buttered toast and lots of honey. A bit of oak, violets and soft spices. This is very nice.

Good body with immediately the return of the sweet fruit from the nose, underlined by lots of caramel and spiced with pepper and nutmeg. Lovely hint of cinnamon. Good balance. Again: very nice.

The finish is medium long, softly seasoned and wonderfully sweet.

This is a very good bourbon indeed. And affordable with a price tag of only 35 EUR in my neck of the woods.
