In the Inganess Bay near Orkney you can find the wreck of the Juniata, a ship that was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in 1918. Despite the damage, the ship – which was then still called the Sprocol – was able to reach Hull to be repaired. The ship was renamed Juniata and served as an oil tanker for another twenty years. On 17 April 1940 it was deliberately sunk off the coast of Orkney as a so-called 'blockship'. This small tidbit of history only serves to indicate that we undoubtedly have a Highland Park in the glass, bottled by the Belgian bottler CaskAid for the whisky club Crann from Boom (in Belgium). Excellent nose on apricots, peaches, Sevilla oranges and mirabelles, but then wrapped in a delicious jacket of heather, soft peat, sea salt and smoke. HP's DNA remains intact, while the PX cask provides it with an extra fruity sweetness. Blissfully good. Nice and full-bodied, almost creamy and perfectly drinkable without water. In addition to the typical salty edge and some earthy notes, soft smoke and heather – typical for the house – the fruit also comes out beautifully on the palate, mainly apricots and orange, but also a hint of pineapple on the BBQ. Great balance. The finish is wonderfully long, quite spicy and smoky and simply very satisfying. Excellent cask selection. Thank you for the sample, Bruno!
