Yay Ambassador Status

So I just became a Glenlivet Ambassador today, which entitles me to a pretty card and an even prettier key to go open some cabinets with some very pretty whiskies inside when I get to Scotland.

I know it's pretty silly to post this on the forums but for some reason I'm very excited by this.

Apologies for bugging anyone.

That is all.

Are you a Friend of Laphroaig yet?

Congratulations! - what do you do as an Ambassador - is it an Extension of their Guardian Project or is it a job as a real Brand Ambassador?

@maltster It's an extension of their Guardian program, but like with more perks. Or so I hear. I won't actually know until I get to try all those pretty little whiskies. I'd LOVE to be a formal whisky ambassador for pretty much most distilleries! I imagine there'd be some AWESOME perks!

@Two-bit Cowboy I wish! Only one bottle owned and it was by my father in law who put it in the trash bin before I could get to it to become a friend of theirs. I'm however thinking of trying to become a friend of most of the distilleries so that maybe I can try more whiskies when I go to Scotland!

I've joined the Friend's of Laphroaig and received my certificate for my lifetime lease on a square foot of Islay. I've joined Bowmore's Ileach Community, Glenfarclas' Global Family, and Jura's Diurachs, and have the certificates for each on my bar wall. The best so far, was joining the Redbreast/Middleton Distillery's Still House, because a few weeks after joining, I received a gorgeous leather (or faux leather) 130 page tasting notebook!

There's some pretty decent benefits to joining these sites, and it's free so why not. Some of the benefits are fun, like having a framed document on your wall showing your lifetime lease to a square foot of Islay, which starts many conversations. Laphrogaig even gives you a template for printing out business cards with your name, e-mail address, and plot #. Kinda silly but fun to hand out at tastings when someone wants my contact info.

The freebies are worth the effort of signing up more with some sites than others. Joining Dalmore's didn't provide anything worth a mention, unless you like downloading wallpapers of Dalmore exclusive bottlings you'll never ever afford! Becoming a member of Balvenie's Warehouse 24 on the other hand, gives you access to their entertaining and informative Whisky Adademy video series. That's worth the sign up time alone, plus they have printable documents like tasting mats, blank tasting notes forms, even a downloadable screen saver for your PC. Balvenie's online Whisky Shelf is very similar to "My Cabnet" on this site, where you can list what's on your shelf, and give tasting notes. Not bad, but I prefer the one here better.

I'd love to hear from others what benefits they have found joining some of these distillery sites, and what their best freebie was. For me, the Middleton tasting notebook tops the list so far.

@MacBaker62 Hahaha I just joined something like 18 different distilleries over the last couple weeks so it'll be interesting to see what ones are awesome and what ones are just meh. I'm really hoping the Glenlivet one is good, because I actually had to spend time and effort posting on their blogs and recruiting friends to get to the ambassador status upgrade. If it's close to the guardian status I will be a wee bit disappointed. Haha
