The 2018 Canadian Whisky Awards will be announced tonight in Victoria.

My favourite of the '17 crop is Wiser's 35 YO. There's no telling what the judges will collectively select as the best across multiple categories... a few years ago they chose Collingwood 21 YO Rye as CWOTY...an extremely controversial pick. Last year the top pick was Masterson's Rye (although some Connosr members would have you believe it is not a Canadian whisky...as if!!).

A few of this year's notables are:

J.P. Wiser's 35 YO 50% abv.

Crown Royal Wine Barrel Finished 40.5% abv.

Canadian Club 40 YO 45% abv.

J.P. Wiser's Triple Barrel Rye 43.4% abv

J.P Wiser's Dissertation 46.1% abv.

Corby's Lot No.40 Cask Strength 12 YO Rye 55% abv.

There should be a Canadian whisky Fan of the Year - you'd win hands down!

Jason Hambrey and paddock judge, a title fight in a swimming pool filled with lot 40 cask strength and the tears of whisky geeks. laughing

On a more serious note, there's quite a varied crop to choose from this year, might get some surprises.

Interestingly there is also three old whiskys competing this year if they are including the Canadian Rockies 35. That's a first no?

I haven’t had the chance to sample Wiser’s 35 but damn that Lot 40 CS is tasty and complex !!

@OdysseusUnbound from my limited exposure, it seems to provide a more immediate rush of flavour compared to CC40. A tad richer, likely due to the dollop of rye included. The CC is initially delicate on the nose and really needs time in the glass to develop.

I second the sentiment on Lot 40 CS, it delivers on the expectations and then some.

Strangely, I find Lot 40 CS more balance and more masculine than the regular Lot 40. That and Wiser's Dissertation are very close for the title. IMHO Lot 40 CS will appeal to more people but I would pick the Dissertation for its uniqueness.

@paddockjudge I like W35 but FC Heritage for best new whisky? Better than Lot 40 CS?

GMAFB

And almost every Canadian whisky known to humanity won a gold or silver medal...

I'll stick with @OdysseusUnbound list on his site.

@Nozinan as we already know _ a camel is a horse designed by a committee....and the electoral college selected The Donald. The power of ONE should never be under estimated. My list would look a bit different than @OdysseusUnbound's.

@paddockjudge To be fair (to be faiiiiiiiii-uhhhhh...please tell me there's another Letterkenny fan in here) you're far more knowledgeable than I am on the subject of Canadian whisky. And my list was not intended as an all-star team, but rather a balanced one. But I'd definitely love to see your list of "greatest". Though it might be best for my wallet if that knowledge remained a secret.

@OdysseusUnbound, Fair enough! I enjoy reading your blog and only recently read your year end post. I maintain an ever evolving list of Great Canadians, and yes, I have a list of My Favourites of 2017.

I second that request for the list if at all possible.

I think that any list that @paddockjudge would come up with would be woefully inadequate.

I would suggest instead that the list be accompanied by a tutored tasting... grin
