About our product images

One or two people have asked about the product images we're using on the site since moving to the new platform. On the last version of the site we used photography from a number of online retailers who gave us permisson to republish their images.

The for new site, we took the decision that – rather than relying on images that don't belong to us – we wanted to become more independant. Obviosuly, we don't own or have access to ALL the products to photograph the bottles ourselves, so we decided to begin illustrating them.

We've started by creating generic bottle images for each brand and are slowly making our way through all the distilleries and independant bottling styles.

Once we have good coverage for at brand level we will create individual images for all every key expressions and we're confident of getting good coverage. Even though it is a huge task we feel that the style suits our overall visual approach plus with our illustrations we're able to generate images that make use of the whisky colour data which you've been inputting for reviews all this time.

In short, the catalogue of product images is going to grow and grow but please bear with us. At least it will keep @Pierre busy for 2017 as is the chief illustrator.

I really like this approach. It is very unique and I love the look of the illustrated bottles. @pierre is quite the artist, as there is definitely no doubt about what those bottles are! Thanks for the explanation, loving all the updates to the site!

I think we'll plug these image updates into the timeline so you can see when new illustrations are added.

I'm pleased with how the indie bottling images are picked up and this will improve once the illustration library grows.

Thanks for the kind comments gentlemen. Some would say that trying to illustrate thousands of whisky bottles is fool's errand. I'm beginning to agree ;)

Definitely unique! Has anyone ever done this before? Looks really good. I can't imagine the hours this would take.

Is there anything we can do to help with this project? Source high-res reference images for example? Remove and scan labels?

@Nelom that is a very kind offer and another example of how the community is getting behind the relaunch. This place has come back to life and that’s great for us to see. There are definitely ways the community can help with the site, these will become apparent down the line, so it’s encouraging to see that people will be willing. In this instance, the image sourcing is actually the easy bit so I’m probably not going to take you up this particular offer. But that doesn’t mean I won’t be asking for help in the future. Thank you once again for offering.

I just noticed that there's more than one version of the generic bottle. In my cabinet I have two, one that shows a darker whisky and one that is a bit lighter in colour. I'm assuming it's completely random which whisky gets what version? Also, are there more than these two versions?

Sorry @Nelom, I missed this message when you posted it (busy week!).

You're going to like this... we have made use of the colour data entered by users when they submit reviews – this has been integrated to give the liquid in the bottle images a more accurate tint.

A good example is the Aberlour reviews page which mostly uses the same image template but has a nice variation of shades.

Perhaps in the future we'll take this a step further and make a bottle image builder...

@jeanluc But the new review format on this site doesn't, unless I've missed something, allow for colour of the whisky to be chosen...

@Nozinan for some reason it is hidden in the form, I will investigate this spy_tone1

We've created a page showing all the product images www.connosr.com/whisky-product-images with the newest additions at the top.

I plan to finesse this further next with pagination and a few extra details – currently it's a big long list of images so may take a while to load.
