It is always a treat to open up an old bottling of my favorit distillery. This 80s bottling of the 12 Year Old, bottled at 43% as opposed to the current 40% version, was presented during my Toshan Night (an all Auchentoshan tasting I hosted). For me, it was the revelation of the evening. Let me share my enthusiasm.

I initially feared some OBE, but that was not the case, thank the Maker. Au contraire. The nose is very fresh and fruity, slighty waxy and silky soft. I get a load of citrus, gooseberries and almonds. Limoncello with a hint of caramal and honey.

On the palate it is soft and fruity as well. A perfect continuation of the nose with the emphasis on lemon. Extremely quaffable.

The finish is quite long and wonderfully crisp.

Okay, so this is not a grand whisky per se, but being a 12 Year Old Auchentoshan, this is a dram to reckon with. Much better than current releases. I was told that there are many batch variations (meaning some are not as good as this one), so I am happy I opened this version, that was bottled for the Italian market. For the record, it is also the 900th whisky that I have tasted since keeping records in October 2009. My liver is not (yet) protesting.

BRILLIANT!!!!! 900 whiskies my friend!! I am extremely jealous of you!!! Perhaps my wife and I should come live at your house :D I don't take up much space, I'd be quite happy to just sit in a corner quietly if you' ll just give me a dram of whisky a day or so, maybe a lil more often? :D

Haha Ash :D

First thing I thought 76% ABV? That would be sicko :) Btw gratz to the 900. whisky. Every day a different whisky on average, that is really impressive. Sounds for me very tough in a logistic way. I mean you have to drink the rest of a bottle sometimes ;)

Greetings to Belgium!

@Wills, Markjedi has a very tough job, but I think I can spell him. All he has to do is let me take the bottles that he's sampled, home. That way he doesn't have to worry about anything. He can sample the whiskies and I can save him the trouble of finishing the bottles :D

Oops, the 76% ABV is a typo, of course. It should read 43%. My bad. Thanks for the offer to help, guys. If ever you are in Belgium, be sure to come and visit and have a few drams. By the way, I own only about 300 whiskies, so most of the ones I try are from samples that I purchase or swap with friends. I couldn't possibly afford to buy 900 full bottles in less than three years...
