I’ve been told that Jack Wiebers actually has a history in the music business. He was once the agent for Michael Jackson (the popstar, not the whisky and beer author) during a tour through Europe. Be that as it may, he is also an independent bottler and this is one of his, a very pale single cask of Auchentoshan from 1991, bottled in 2008. Meagre, rather grainy nose with a touch of vanilla and grass, but little else. A bit of hand warmth makes it somewhat soury even. Pity, but this is not exactly an inviting nose. The palate is little improvement. The typical Auchentoshan citrusy notes appear immediately with some mild peppers. Then the vanilla and grasses return. A bit of garden herbs, but that is it. The finish is rather short, which is something of a blessing in this case. Well, 1991 is normally quite a good year for my beloved Auchentoshan. So I’m quite confident it was not the spirit. I cannot shake the feeling that this must have been a bad cask. Around 190 EUR, which it absolutely does not warrant. Stay away.
