The Old Malt Cask series is currently part of Hunter Laing, the bottler that was founded after the brothers Fred and Stewart Laing split (leaving Fred with Douglas Laing). This Auchentoshan was presented at the Antwerp Whisky Festival in October 2015. Let us get to work!
Oi, this is interesting! This is no classic Auchentoshan nose, mind you. I do get malt, grass and citrus fruit, but this nose is dominated by a weird, mild whiff of diesel. As if I am gassing up the car. Then some Galak chocolate with rice. I am sure you know what I mean. Some Bounty even. Coconut and chocolate. After a few moments something green emerges. Pine needles? Camphor and ginger are present. This is fun. Light, but very inviting.
It is wonderfully creamy, mouthcoating and powerful. Citrus comes first, in the guise of lime and grapefruit. Some Jelly Beans. Candy-like. Although that does not linger. It becomes rather spicy and even somewhat dry. But it sticks to your teeth.
The long finish remains spicy until the death. A last, small uppercut of sweetness at the end.
Very nice nose, good palate and finish. Toshan’s better work.
