This Auchentoshan was distilled on 22nd October 1997 and bottled by Signatory on 22nd October 2018, 21 years later to the day. It was selected by online whisky retailer The Whisky Barrel as an exclusive. Obviously I had to have it for the collection, but it looked so good that I ordered two bottles. One of those was presented during my birthday tasting earlier this year.

The nose is simply delicious! Mokatine galore, butterscotch and coconut on tip, hint of chocolate and nutmeg, dates in the distance. But… to be fair: there is not really much left of the distillery character. Whatever: it’s a super nose and that’s what matters.

It’s oily to creamy and therefor quite mouth coating. The dark fruit comes first, joined by some rubber (the good kind, hence not an off-note) and dark caramel, candied oranges and a marmalade of dates like the one you only get in Tunisia for breakfast. Some bitter notes from the wood, as well as some woodsmoke. The second sip evolves towards more oranges and chocolate. Orangettes. It’s not a punishment.

The finish is long, seasoned with some nutmeg and a hint of cloves, with a bit of tannins at the death.

Nice cask selection by The Whisky Barrel. I’m happy I was able to score two bottles.
