In November 2012 I visited Spirits in the Sky in Leuven (Belgium), where my friend and Brand Ambassador Gordon Dundas presented this release during the Auchentoshan Masterclass. It is a grand Toshan, matured solely on first fill oloroso sherry casks. The colour leaves no doubt. Gordon poured from bottle 4/1000 and bottle 5/1000 is part of my collection. In the meantime, bottle number 2/1000 has also been acquired, but the hunt for bottle 1/1000 seems useless as that one has apparently gone into the Auchentoshan Archives.

The nose bursts with dark fruits, raisins in the lead. Next up are wonderful aromas of fresh leather, slightly burned cake, roasted almonds, liquorice allsorts and dark honey. Wonderfully seasoned with cinnamon and saffron and a pinch of aniseed. The delicate triple distilled spirit of Auchentoshan carries the three decades in a sherry cask with grace.

It is wonderfully creamy and mouth coating and immediately spicy. Again dark fruits and hints of dark chocolate, perfectly countered by the dry tannins of the oak. Liquorice and aniseed, again. Boy, this makes me absolutely happy.

The finish is drying and very long on liquorice, cinnamon and even some tobacco leaves.

This is an incredibly good Toshan. One of the best things to come out of this Glaswegian distillery of late.

Update: this wonderful Auchentoshan just won top honours at Whisky Advocate: Lowland Single Malt of the Year. I could not agree more!

Sounds fantastic! Unlucky on bottle #1 but then again I don't blame them for holding on to it!

32 years in first fill Oloroso has got to be special. I don't know if I've heard of a whisky being matured for that long in a first fill cask - with maybe the exception of Glenfarclas.

Seems like one that could continue to age beyond 32 years as you haven't mentioned anything detrimental about the oak.. what do you reckon?

.. and I've since read that the 50 year old Auchentoshan (1957) was also aged entirely in Oloroso, so obviously this is possible!

Indeed not an easy feat with the delicate spirit of Auchentoshan, but if the wood is just right, Auchentoshan ages beautifully. I do believe it could indeed endure a few more years in that cask. I love the 50yo as well (only tried from cask 479, though, I hear cask 480 is even better - I hope to one day be able to purchase that bottle).
