Best value for money drams

Curious as to what people here think is the best bang for buck Whisky (normal) money can buy (I'm taking about sub 150$ bottles here, fyi) ?

I'd venture that Tomatin 18yo (new 46% version) has to be a contender.

Glendronach revival 15 gets my number 1 vote too.

A'bunadh is also good. Probably many of the usual suspects. Glenfarclas 15 is lovely for the money, Ardbeg 10 has to be on the list. I would also suggest Knob creek single barrel, Blantons Gold, a Redbreast 12 cask strength. Hmm, better stop, the list could go on a bit. Ooh,

Down here in South Africa I'd say: Ardbeg 10, Glenfarclas 12, Highland Park 12, Jameson Select Reserve Small Batch

@maltymike: Have you tried 3 Ships. It's a SA blended whisky. Showed up in Canada last summer. Quite liked it. Unfortunately, LCBO isn't carrying it anymore. Wasn't all that expensive. I think at the time it was under $40

@Jules. There is so much good whisky to choose from at that price. I would think most with go for their particular favorites. For me, I'd buy lagavulin or an Arbeg. I'm a fan of the Islay malts

For me it would definitely be the A'Bunadh. In my opinion the best bottle under $100 CDN.

Bladnoch Sherry cask matured, 10,11, 12 Year olds bottled at 55%. WHEN they were available, bottles were around the $75 dollar range (in Canadian dollars), plus shipping of course (which was cheap if someone brought it over from UK for you). It's a dram worth twice the price.

It's challenging to answer this question since the pricing of whisky/ey ranges considerable - even the exact same single malt scotch can vary $15 to $30 from store to store...

All that said...I've found that the Aberlour 12 yr Non-Chill Filter, and Balvenie 14 yr Caribbean Cask (both $50 by me) are really good value for what ya get...Also the Glenmorangie Nectar D'or for $60 gets honorable mention.

In Ontario, this is a very relative term but, my picks would be:

Knob Creek Single Barrel George Dickel #12 Te Bheag (a blend that acts like a malt, imho) Laphroaig QC BenRiach Curiositas BenRiach Herodotus Fumosus

Based on reviews (though I have yet to try it!) Glenlivet Nadurra and Nadurra Oloroso (Cask Strength at less than Can$90). The Oloroso is likely my next purchase.

Honorable mention to Glenfarclas 15 and Aberlour Abunadh for the amount of sherried flavours that come through, though they are $95-100.

In the UK it's got to be A'Bunadh .At 60% abv and priced cheaper than the revival and nadurra (my runners up) it is absolutely superb value.Laphroaig QC also gets an honourable mention as does talisker 10 (surprised nobody's mentioned the Skye distillery).

Glenfarclas 105 must also be mentioned.Actually we could go on for hours .There's a lot of value at the cheaper end of the single malt range.

@PeterG7 regarding Three Ships 5yo, indeed, that one should also be on the best value for money drams. To the average whisky drinker, this dram could easily be mistaken for a Talisker 10 in a blind tasting.

Regarding the price, here its costs around ZAR 140 = USD 12!

In my region I bought a bunch of Glenlivet Nadurra 16 yo bottles for € 40,- ( 49,- USD) a piece. That's absolutely a bargain! One other favorite of mine, Deanston 12 yo is available for € 30,- (37,- USD). Both bottles are great value for money.

@Jules For me Talisker 10. Here in France, we can found it for 25-30 Euros. The value for money is awesome. It can rivalize with Lagavulin 16 who costs twice...

Under $150 leaves a lot of room. I'd put most all bourbons and ryes on the list.

I'd add GlenDronach's cask strength series, which is excellent and reasonably priced (I think)

Tomintoul Peaty Tang. If you already tried the basic Islay expressions and are looking for a good and very affordable peaty whisky, this is one to consider. €26,- for a liter bottle is not too bad :)

A good one to vote for is Great King Street Artist blend. I just bought a bottle (50 cl) for 25 Eur and it is a really good whisky!

I'm not sure value plays a role in Australian Whisky priciing but Ardbeg 10yo. Malt is more reasonably priced than all Whiskies at that quality level and it really does 'deliiver the goods' at a mere Au.$81.99, and sadly almost all Malt Whisky has had a price hike: The Glengoyne #1 Cask that I'm much taken with is still the original batch from last year and has had two price rises from an initial $84.00 to $100.00. same Whisky, how greedy is that!

Cheers.

OGD 114 and FRSB definitely agree! Although the 114 is closer to $30 in my market now.

I guess this will vary from place to place but here in the UK I reckon the following currently offer good vfm.

Ardbeg 10 and 'Oogie' £45 - £55, Glenfarclas 15 £50, Benromach 10 £35, Kilkerran 12 £35, Highland Park 12 £25 - £30, Old Pulteney 12 £25 - £30 Arran 10 & 14 £35 - £45

I'll also add a few bourbons: Four Roses small batch and Wild Turkey 101 can be found sub £30 as can Evan Williams WL BiB. All excellent at that price point. Sometime see Bulleit at £20 which is also very good, imo.

@RianC, yes, the answer to whisk(e)y value for money questions is totally place-specific. It is really a different question in each and every locality.

LOT 40, LOT 40, LOT 40!!!

@OdysseusUnbound

These are place-specific for sure, as many have mentioned, but here are my picks for Ontario:

  • Lot 40 ($39.95, but often comes on sale)
  • Forty Creek Copper Pot Reserve ($30.95, some batch variation, but generally a darn good whisky for not a lot of money)
  • Alberta Premium Dark Horse (forget the hullaballoo over the minute quantity of "added" sherry, this is good whisky for $31.95, and it often comes on sale)
  • Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye ($35.45, I know a lot of you don't like it, but I do)
  • Bushmills Black Bush ($37.45)
  • Wild Turkey 101 ($37.75 often comes on sale as well)
  • Benromach 10 Year Old ($59 when it was available. Amazing value for money)
  • Aberlour 10 Year Old ($64.95, it's only 40% ABV, but it's better than a LOT of more expensive single malts out there, cough Macallan Gold, Macallan Double Cask, cough)

@OdysseusUnbound, good for you for plugging Aberlour 10 yo! I am a giant fan of Aberlour 10yo, and I like it much better than every one of the 10+ tastes I've had of Aberlour 12 yo. But what happened? Change in bottling strength recently? I guess so, and I vaguely remember having heard about that, probably from @Nozinan. The two bottles of Aberlour 10 yo I've owned, both bought in Ontario because it is usually not sold in the US, have been at 43% ABV. Two Connosr members were very helpful in procuring them for me. I have purchased more than a few bottles at the LCBO myself, but never any Aberlour.

Best buy at the LCBO? Not availble now, but hands down, it was the Alberta Premium 30 yo for CAN $ 50. That was in 2011, though.

@Victor, not to be overlooked is the younger iteration of the same bond, Alberta Premium 25 YO $30 in 2011 at LCBO...two dusty bottles at different locations.
