There is not a single bottle of bourbon to be had under $25 in Canada that is worthy of a mention; come to think of it, there may not a bottle in that category. EAGLE RARE SINGLE BARREL 10-YEAR-OLD KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON in the under $50 range and without any doubt, BOOKER'S is top of the list north of the border....bourbon supply is limited, however the selection is improving, ever so slowly.

@Nolinske - First of all, where have you found a Stagg at less then $60? I'm still waiting to grab a Stagg anywhere, at any price. (Okay, maybe not ANY price, but I'm willing to pay a bit more than MSRP for just one.)
To answer your question:
Under $25: Buffalo Trace.
Under $60: Willet's Family Reserve.
Favorite bourbon: Booker's.

The price tags do greatly restrict discussion here, since these sorts of prices are only available in the US. Categories # 1 and 2 would be more like $ 60 and $ 120 everywhere else. Some of us would never pick one favourite in each category except for an exercise. Exercises can be fun, too. For me:
1) under $ 25, I'll take Old Grand-Dad 114 2) currently under $ 60, Booker's 3) Favourite bourbon: pre-Fall 2011 Pappy Van Winkle 15

So I'm going to put an additional condition with my answer; pick from shelf offerings. So, walking into a store and picking in those categories I would go with
Old Grand Dad 114 Kentucky Spirit PVW 15 (pre-2011)

Ya I realize that many of connosr great members from regions of the world that have horrible whiskey pricing will not be able to take part in this discussion. I probably should have made a budget/premium/favorite rather than prices. Lesson learned and at least I found a new one to try in Old grand dad which I surprising have either overlooked or not seen

@Victor, I'm curious, what would you select as your favorite bourbon after Fall 2011?

@Bourbondork - Excellent Idea / Discussion, and I like the change to 'Shelf Offerings' vs. 'Price Point'...unfortunately, Bourbon and I have this love / hate relationship, in that I want to like it, but every time I try some, I get turned off by the woodiness and the heat (for some reason a bourbon at 45% ABV seems a lot hotter to me than a Scotch at 46% ABV or even 50% ABV).
That being said, bourbon is great for making BBQ sauces for ribs and pulled pork, and I love baking with it (pecan bourbon carrot cake...), but I haven't yet found a bourbon that I actually enjoy drinking straight...

Under 25 Elijah Craig 12yr, under 60 Willett Family Estate 8 or 9 yr -both are under 60 and were fantastic ( if you can find them) Favorite bourbon BTAC William L Weller 2011incredible. Side note I thought the BTAC Thomas H Handy 2010 is top pick if you include rye. I will have to pick up a OGD 114

@CanadianNinja, asked to list just a single favourite bourbon, Pappy 15 would still be my choice, but it would be specifically just the juice released BEFORE the fall of 2011.
"New Pappy 15" is also very good bourbon, but there are probably five or ten I would prefer to it.

@CanadianNinja @Victor well now assume we are holding your feet to the fire Victor. Pappy pre 2011 is out. What is your favorite Bourbon. I know its an impossible question, but what is your trapped on an islands/last drink Bourbon if all the pre 2011 pappy is gone?

@Nolinske, with no pre-2011 PVW 15 available, Wlliam Larue Weller 2011 release is my favourite.
(After that: Willett Private Barrel "Sopressata" or George T. Stagg 2010 release-- these are all mind-numbingly good.)

@Victor thanks victor! I need to try the William larue Weller which I haven't tried yet everyone seems to loveeit.

I'd go with Old Weller Antique(budget), Thomas H. Handy(premium) and William Larue Weller (favorite)

@Eli I was thinking about the OWA for my under 25 , very good for the price

@Cardinal. Old Weller Antique 107 is my number 2 pick bourbon for under $ 25. Long may it be available, and at that price.

I'm always interested to hear how the Pappy Van Winkle 20 compares to the PVW15. I was forced to choose between the two last December and I chose the 20. Jason Pyle's Sour Mash Manifesto ranks the 15 higher in 2012. Any other opinions on this score? Anyone have the opportunity to sample a dram of the 2012 20YO next to a dram of the 15YO?

@Cardinal @Victor I was able to try the Old Wellers Antique at the Cove in baton rouge which has the best whiskey selection that i know of in Louisiana outside New Orleans. It was absolutely fantastic thanks for the great recommendation! Now i just have to find the Old Granddad 114 to try

@Nolinske, yes, there is a reason why @bourbondork and his buddies have bought whole barrels of Old Weller Antique 107 in their yearly barrel buys...(next month, I believe, is their next run)...it is the next best thing to William Larue Weller, sort of a "William Larue Weller Light". As you discovered, it has plenty of flavour at 53.5% ABV.

I'm gonna go with the budget/premium/anything system.
For me it's easy. Buget: Buffalo Trace. Premium/anything are both the same: Booker's.
My local store recently got some Four Roses Single Barrel, and I've been meaning to pick some up, but I doubt it'll knock off Booker's as my favourite. I love that stuff.

I see alot of Bookers on people's lists , never had it . I love a barrel strength whisky , think it's time to try bookers

@Victor We are indeed gearing up for April. While we're obviously getting single barrel OWA's, the shelf offering is no slouch. There's been conflicting stories about the demise of OWA so let's hope that label stays around for a while. I think to date we've selected 9 barrels of OWA and are shooting for two more next month.

@Bourbondork so where do I need to take a trip to come to your store to pick up a few bottles of OWA in all its glory? :)
11 years ago 0
@Nolinske ....well, there is no store. These bottles don't ever see a retail shelf.

@Bourbondork Oh I didn't know....lucky you my friend I am very jealous of you and presumably your whiskey club!

As I am wont to do with threads like this, I will expand out my answer with some context:
Budget bottle - Evan Williams Single Barrel for defining the essence of a rye-based bourbon mashbill. OWA 107 for the best quality to value (plus, I'm a 'wheater'). Old Grand Dad 114 for the most entertaining bourbon experience in a value bottle.
Premium - Booker's for pure bourbon authenticity (there's barrel char in the bottle!!). Parker's Heritage Classic 4th edition 10 yo wheated (I'm a wheater). Old Potrero 18th Century Rye Whiskey for the most entertaining bourbon experience in a premium bottle.
Favourite bottle - George T. Stagg 2011 for its luxury profile (leather, wood polish, tobacco, etc.). William Larue Weller (I'm a wheater).
Thank you for indulging...

As with many here, I'd go with Eagle Rare under $25 (when it's on sale, if not, Buffalo Trace will do). In the premium category, I'll say Four Roses Single Barrel, but Knob Creek Single Barrel or Booker's are good offerings as well. My favorite all time has been the limited release Wild Turkey Tradition 14 yr. I've yet to get my hands on any Stagg or Pappy or anything like that, but I'm plenty happy with that fact.

I'll do it in Euro's if u dont mind :)
1 Elijah Craig 12 why: high rye mashbill, big wood influence and dry finish, great for sipping straight and for an Old Fashioned, Manhattan or a nice Sazerac! (I dont like cheap Rye whisky like Old Overholt)
2 Old Potrero Single malt rye. Does rye whisky count? If not 4R Single Barrel 50% Why: Great depth of flavor and something entirely different
3 Elijah Craig 12 Why: very versatile and lots of quality and age for not so much money
But @Nolinske, something in your post caught my eye, is George T Stagg under $60,- where you live???? In Europe there is one internetshop selling it now and then for €120... :(

@PeatyZealot ya that was a typo I can get it for $80 US but not 60 I have no clue what I was doing eh I posted this :)

under 25$: Old Grand Dad 114 Proof (2nd Evan Williams Single Barrel) under 60$: bookers (2nd Knob creek single barrel) over 60$: PVW 15 (until 2011 like Victor said) or George T. Stagg

With my limited experience, I can list two: 1) Under $25 - W.L. Weller 12 2) Under $60 - Rowan's Creek 3) Favorite Bourbon - Rowan's Creek

So there have been several scotch discussions about favorite scotches below $50 or $100. As a bourbon enthusiast, don't get me wrong I love scotch as well :), I want to know everyone's favorite bourbons. Since bourbons are cheaper we have to modify the rules a bit. There will be three categories. 1) Favorite bourbon under $25 2) Favorite bourbon under $60 3) Favorite bourbon. This would be your fantasy bourbon or if you just love that $15 bottle put it here.
My list would go as follows. 1) Eagle Rare 10yo Single Barrel 2) Blantons or George T Stagg. I really cant decide at the moment. 3) Van Winkle 15
