Breakfast Whisky

My normal ritual is to have my one small dram in the evening after everyone has gone to bed... my window of peace, quiet, and solitude. However about a week ago, I woke up one day and pretty much the first thought that crossed my mind was "mmmm whisky..." I have not had the urge since, and did not indulge on the day, but it planted the seed of a whimsical question in my mind... what would be the ideal breakfast malt?

I have the occasional breakfast whisky if I don't have anything important to do that day. I always like something light and sweet, like a canadian rye.

On weekends, I sometimes have a dram of Talisker Distiller's Edition in the morning just before brunch. I find it clean, refreshing, and perfectly sweet, like a Sunday walk through a perfect meadow.

Even though I have not tried the "morning whisky" I am compelled to try it tomorrow. With that said I am thinking that a champaign whisky will do, such as the balblair 97, This is a delightful and elegant dram to start the beginning of a new day

Last year at Maltstock in The Netherlands ( www.maltstock.com ) we actually had a breakfast whisky. Every year at maltstock we have a full Scottish breakfast and last year we had a whisky to go with it. It was specifically created for Maltstock by The Compass Box Whisky Company. It was light and clean and went well with the heavy breakfast. The entire idea was not new to me though. I work whisky stands at all sorts of events and festivals and the company I work for imports Glencadam a small part of Angus Dundee distillers. Gkencadam has a nice core range, but the 10 year old whisky is one we for quite a few years now have jokingly called our "Breakfast Whisky". We always said that because it has a light taste of crushed cornflakes and is quite oily and creamy. That being said, I would not advocate drinking whisky with breakfast too often. Just now and again with company for the novelty of it. I am speaking only for myself here. I spit more whisky out in a week than most people drink in months because of my work as a whisky presenter and consultant. I for myself at least, really must watch my intake and I do watch it well. I have seen so many friends and colleagues becoming their own best customers and its a slippery road when that starts. Nevertheless , breakfast whisky to get back to the subject is a great novel idea and something to be shared among friends if you have any staying over. If you are having a heavy breakfast , it actually helps the digestion.

Just took delivery of my Alligator and could not wait to try it. Had a dram at 9:30AM PST and compared it to the ANB, Uigeadail, and the Corry. As an Ardbeg Noob I don't know too much of their other many expressions, but I feel that the Alligator is like a more powerful Corry. Very ashy, hints of sweetness, powerful smoke.

I like the Uige and ANB better.

@whiskyshiba Have you had the opportunity to try the Supernova? The "can't wait to get it home and open it" syndrome is particularly familiar to me!

@Peatpete, I have tried the 2010 Supernova at a tasting but forgot how it was because just before it I tried the Octomore Orpheus. After that dram, everything tasted like smoke.
