I know there's not a lot of Brisbane folk on Connosr but felt it's my duty to pass this important news on! We don't get much in the way of tasting events up here.

Found out via The Odd Whisky Company's mailout by Graham Wright:

** Big Whisky Tasting In Brisbane Spiro's Whisky Expo When: Wednesday 29th Febuary from 6pm Where: Transcontinental Hotel, Brisbane Bookings: (07) 3236 1366

Shane from Springbank and I will be there, come say hello!

I've just booked myself a spot, sounds like there's still a fair few spots left.

Cost is $50 and I'm picking up my ticket at the door, just call the number above or visit Spiro's bottle shop for a ticket www.spirosbottleshops.com.au

Given Spiro's range of malts, the tasting might be pretty good, I hope! Bring a friend!

Hey SquidgyAsh, Brisbane's a nice city =D

On the very remote chance that anyone is going and wants to say g'day, I'll be the skinny dude with black pants and black shoes, and I guess a shirt of some kind (hey, I don't plan my wardrobe a day in advance so that's the best I can do).

@systemdown Hahaha it's quite often my wife and I debate leaving Perth and moving to Melbourne or Brisbine or Sydney. I'd love to work at Australia Zoo or Lone Pine Sanctuary which are fairly close to you if I'm reading the map right. Please let us know how the whisky tasting goes!!!

Here's the wrap-up for anyone intersted, my first blog and first post: whiskyoz.blogspot.com.au/2012/03/…

I thought I should put my photos and notes to good use.

@SquidgyAsh Yeah Lone Pine is pretty close indeed, not too far south. Quick to get to on the freeway.. Brisbane over Sydney, ANY day (But I'm a Queenslander so I would say that regardless - take it with a grain of salt, perhaps).

@systemdown: Excellent review! I wish I could have been there...maybe next time. I'll bet they didn't have any Whisky as old as me; in fact I'll be 'chuffed' to make it to the next time.

Cheers.

@A'bunadhman Cheers for checking out my blog post, yeah it was a fantastic night. Definitely an evening well spent, I'm sure next year will be bigger and better still. And - I don't know how old you are but the oldest there for tasting was the Glenfarclas 40 - have you had a whisky greater than your age?

@systemdown: Not anymore I haven't. When I was a 29yo. I had a 30yo. Ballentines Pure Malt ( probably Scarpa, according to the chap in the Whisky shop in Hong Kong.) It wasn't memorable, apart from the fact that it was a wierd khaki colour - Nothing since!

The handful of Stellar Whiskies I've drunk in bot. or sample have been between 12 & 18yo. with perhaps the exception being the old Springbank 21yo. An old Whisky maker once told me that it was his opinion that beyond 15yrs. all Whisky starts to become 'slimy'. This is probably more dependent on location than actual age; the far northern Whiskies maturing more slowly than their southern counterparts but it is not a bad rule-of-thumb.

Cheers and Good Luck.
