A Bunnhabhain at respectable age, that is what we will conclude our North Star Spirits tasting with. This Ileach slept for more than a quarter century on a bourbon hogshead. I am quite sure this is going to be a treat.

Yes! A wonderfully fruity nose on banana, coconut, fresh pineapple, lime and bergamot. A little fruit bomb indeed. The maritime character of Bunna is a bit out of the picture but that is no punishment as this is really good. Vanilla and camphor are the spices on duty.

On the palate, I enjoy this creamy – nah, call it waxy – whisky on sweet fruit, while a beautiful bittersweet smokiness kicks in that goes hand-in-glove with a wonderfully salty edge. Yes, this is Islay after all. Midpalate I get some liquorice, white pepper and ginger.

The finish is very long and returns to sweetness, but at the death it is the smoke that has the final say.

My teenage son communicates via chat with all these strange abbreviations. OMG is one often used. It suites this whisky very well.
