The adventure of the Smoking Buffalo started in 2011 with the release of a 10 years old Bowmore. Now the 9th edition has appeared in this series of peaty malts in honor of Belgium’s first class football club AA Gent (in my neck of the woods). It is a very young and heavily peated Bunna, distilled on 1st November 2013 and bottled on 9th November 2017. So just over 4 years old… The label proudly states ‘Staoisha’ – which refers to the lake where Bunna gets its cooling water from. I’m curious!

Oh, yes! A very fatty nose with loads of earth, nettles, garden herbs, oyster sap, sweet peat and smoke mackerel. Some walnuts, freshly cut roast beef and something mildly sour. There is no sweetness whatsoever bar a young apple and some vanilla all the way in the back. I even get something sweaty! Yes, it has a very dirty edge, but that makes it quite appealing, in fact.

OMG, you can almost chew this baby, what a fatty body! And for such a young beast? Mouth coating and wonderfully sweet (at last) with loads of peat. Fish oil, pig on a roast being licked by the flames, ashes, citrus, apples, vanilla.

The finish last throughout the penalty shoot-out and is the perfect continuation of the palate.

Delicious, young and powerful Bunna. An absolute monster! Only 59? Recommended!
