Bunnahabhain is known for its soft, quasi unpeated whisky, but they have some exceptions as well. This is one of those: a 6 years old Moine (which means morass or peat) that matured on a bourbon cask. The Ultimate – the label of the Dutch company van Wees – has quite a few Bunna on the market. This is a release from 2014.

A fatty nose on earth, nettles, oyster sap and walnuts. Some maggimix and young apples. Dirty in a good way, greasy and very attractive if you are a fan of the style (Me! Me!), despite being rather straightforward. Less is more, remember?

On the palate it is greasy as well. Very oily yet a lot more fruity than the nose promised. Sweeter as well. Think apple, banana, citrus fruit, vanilla – a whole lot of the latter – and a lovely development of smoke. Some ashes in the background.

The finish is rather short, but smoky sweet.

Used to be only 40 EUR, imagine that! Unfortunately long gone (as far as I know).
