Calling out BS

I was very pleased to see a letter to the editor of Canada's national newspaper that pushes back on critics' descriptions of tasting notes. While I don't find this particular critic's whisky reviews helpful, I do acknowledge that because I used to like his wine reviews he did point me towards Bruichladdich Peat an The Laddie Classic, 2 of my favourite laddies from my early days, and Springbank 12 CS and Claret Wood, both among the 20-30 whiskies I count in my top 10.

For your entertainment only, here is a link to the review (scroll down), and a paste of the letter:

Letter:

New Year's Eve nuance?

Re Stocking Up (Dec. 23): When Beppi Crosariol tells us that Glen Grant 18-year-old rare-edition whisky has "primary flavours of caramel and vanilla and uplifting aromatics that suggest honeycomb, roasted nuts, citrus, stone fruits and meadow flowers on toasted cereal" he is omitting important epicurean details.

What are the secondary flavours? What kind of nuts: chestnuts, macadamia, pistachios? What meadow flowers: cowslip, vetchling, sneezewort? And what cereals: Froot Loops, Cap'n Crunch, Frankenberry?

@Nozinan, calling "BS" on robotic reviews and catatonic critiques has not made me a lot of friends on-line, including Connosr....but what the fuck (for those of you who are offended, let me rephrase that, WHAT THE FUCK!). This will be a great place to park grievances and call out posers....you know who you are and we're coming for you....

I was just really amused that something like this would make it into the letters section of the Globe and Mail.

Beppi's got a good Cheers and Jeers column in this weekend's Globe.

@paddockjudge when writing reviews or reading them, there’s definitely a scale with “dumb fuck” at one end and “pretentious fuck” at the other end. I try to stay somewhere in the middle. wink

@OdysseusUnbound I'm not so sure that each side is mutually exclusive. LOL

@Nozinan yes, me too. I would like to see him, or someone, do a regular whisk(e)y column.

@Nozinan good plan. He knows much more about whisky than Beppi.

@Nozinan That's very kind of you to say! Years ago I wanted to write a spirits column in NOW Magazine, but that didn't go anywhere (the editor doesn't like me much) But yes it's something I would love to do. So much writing on the subject is total BS.
