It's impossible to suggest something less common when we don't know what there is on offer... Do they have Glenfarclas 105 or Aberlour A'Bunadh for example? Heavy sherry is always an interesting match for cigars.

If I had to suggest a scotch to newish single malt drinkers smoking cigars I would pick up a bottle of laphroaig quarter cask scotch(smoke on smoke). More likely I would buy a bottle of Dalmore Grand Reserva if I could find it but the 12 yr is very nice too. With the 12 yr you would have some change in your pocket you could pick up a few more cigars.

I would, as I always do, recommend Caol Ila 12. Runs about $55-60 locally and is a staple for me. I smoke cigarettes and occasionally cigars and they seem to pair imho. The only downside I see to it would be Islay's can be an aquired taste and the smoke ash taste could get to be a little overboard for some people. What did/would you recommend if you don't mind my asking?

The first issue of the newly renamed "Whisky Advocate" magazine had an article on Cigar/whisky pairings. Their top choice was Lagavulin 16.
Other good choices were Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask, which seems tailored for cigar pairing, and the obvious choice of the Dalmore Cigar Malt.
In the under $70 price range, the Balvenie the affordable choice.

So I was visiting the my local purveyor of fine drinks the other day, whenever I visit I always give the Whisk(e)ys a quick look, there was a customer with 2 members of staff looking as confused as each other. The customer wanted to buy single malt for his friends Whiskey/Cigar themed birthday party for a group new the world of single malts (familiar with Bourbons). He wanted to spend no more than $70, he wanted a bottle that wasn’t run of the mill, and e.g. he knew that Glenfiddich was the bestselling single, so that was out.
What would you recommend?
