A golden auldie from Coal Ila, distilled when yours truly was only 14 and bottled before I was even seriously involved with whisky (was I ever?). Wilson & Morgan bottled it at 50% in their (then) popular Extra Strength series. The pale color suggest a refill bourbon cask.
Suprisingly soft and sweet nose with hardly any peat, but all the more white fruit and vanilla. Coconut with hints of vanilla and physalis – also goldberry or pineapple cherry. Some white chocolate. And then, after a few minutes of air, a soft trace of peat and salt appears. Very clean and inviting.
On the palate, you immediately recognize Caol Ila, but again it goes down the sweet road straight away with a truckload of vanilla and apples. White chocolate returns, but is immediately countered by some play-doh and sea salt. I am again surprise how clean this Ileach is. Nice!
The finish is medium long, softly peppered and hold a nice balance between sweet and salty.
A bit atypical in my book, but not any less beautiful. Finding another bottles is like looking for a needle in the proverbial haystack, but still… I’m putting it on my ‘to look out for’ list.
